What affects the price?
Cable run length — the distance between your consumer unit and the charger position is the single biggest factor.
Wall type and routing — brick and plaster are straightforward; routing through multiple internal walls or solid stone takes longer.
Your consumer unit — older units sometimes need upgrading to safely support an EV circuit. We check this at survey.
The charger you choose — from value smart chargers to premium designer units, there’s a £300+ spread between models.
Groundworks — chargers on detached garages or gateposts may need armoured cable buried in trenching.
What isn't normally included?
Some installations require additional work beyond a standard installation. Examples include: very long cable runs, excavation or trenching, consumer unit replacement, three-phase electrical work, decorative making good, specialist access equipment, and installation into detached garages or outbuildings. If additional work is required, it will always be explained before installation starts so there are no unexpected costs.
Will I need a consumer unit upgrade?
Not every property requires a consumer unit upgrade. During the survey we assess the existing electrical installation to determine whether your current consumer unit is suitable for the additional electrical load. If the installation already complies with current regulations, no upgrade may be required. Where an upgrade is recommended, we’ll explain why, outline the benefits and include the cost within your quotation before any work is carried out.
Can I reduce installation costs?
In many cases, yes. You may be able to reduce installation costs by: choosing a charger location closer to the consumer unit, installing before landscaping or driveway work, ensuring clear access to the installation area, providing photographs during the quotation process, and selecting a charger suitable for your needs rather than paying for unnecessary features. We’ll always recommend the most practical solution rather than the most expensive one.
Is it cheaper to buy my own charger?
Usually not — we buy at trade prices, and self-supplied units can complicate warranty coverage. If you have a preferred model in mind, ask us to price it for you and we’ll show you the comparison.
Can I get a grant?
Government grants change from time to time and eligibility depends on your circumstances. While grants for most homeowners have ended, funding may still be available for landlords, flat owners, apartment residents and some workplace installations. We’d recommend checking the current schemes on the official GOV.UK website — and if you qualify, let us know and we’ll be happy to advise how the grant applies to your installation.
