EV Charger Replacement & Upgrades

Damaged EV charger? Repairs and replacements across North London & Herts

Faulty, outdated or unsupported charger? Replacing it is simpler than you think.

Thousands of home EV chargers were installed across the UK between 2019 and 2022 under the old government grant schemes — and many of those early units are now showing their age. Failed units, discontinued apps, no smart features and no solar compatibility are the problems we hear about most.

The good news: because your property already has a dedicated EV circuit, replacing a charger is usually quicker and more straightforward than a first-time installation. We’ll assess your existing wiring, confirm it meets current regulations, and fit a modern smart charger — often in a single short visit.

Signs it’s time to replace your EV charger

  • It’s developed a fault — intermittent charging, error lights, tripping the electrics, or a cable or socket that’s damaged or unreliable.
  • The app no longer works — several early charger brands have discontinued their apps or shut down their smart platforms, leaving chargers working as “dumb” units or not at all.
  • The manufacturer has left the market — if your charger’s maker no longer trades in the UK, spare parts and support can be difficult or impossible to obtain.
  • It has no smart features — older chargers can’t schedule charging for cheap overnight tariffs, which means you’re likely paying more for every mile than you need to.
  • It’s not solar compatible — if you’ve added (or are planning) solar panels, an older charger can’t divert your surplus energy into your car.
  • You’ve changed vehicle — a new EV with a bigger battery or different charging habits sometimes justifies a more capable charger.

If any of those sound familiar, it’s worth getting a quote — in many cases the electricity savings from a modern smart charger on the right tariff go a long way towards paying for the upgrade. Not sure whether it’s a fault or just a settings issue? Try our troubleshooting guide first.

Why upgrade to a modern smart charger?

Charge on the cheapest electricity automatically. Modern smart chargers work with EV tariffs to schedule charging during low-cost overnight periods — no manual timers, no remembering to plug in at the right moment.

Use your solar panels. Solar-compatible chargers like the myenergi Zappi divert surplus solar generation into your vehicle instead of exporting it to the grid.

Control everything from your phone. Start and stop charging, monitor energy use, view charging history and receive updates — from anywhere.

Ongoing support and updates. Current chargers from established manufacturers receive regular software updates, keeping them secure and improving features over time.

What’s involved in a replacement?

Every replacement starts with a survey of your existing installation. Where the existing circuit, protective devices and earthing meet current regulations, we can often reuse them — which keeps the job quick and the cost down. Where something falls short of today’s standards, we’ll explain exactly what needs updating and why, and include it in your fixed quote before any work begins.

A typical straightforward swap involves:

  • Safely disconnecting and removing your old charger
  • Inspecting and testing the existing circuit and protective devices
  • Installing and commissioning your new charger
  • Full electrical testing and certification
  • A demonstration of the new charger and its app before we leave

Because the cable run and circuit already exist, replacement installations are often simpler than a first-time install — we’ll confirm the exact price for your property with a fixed, no-obligation quote.

Chargers we commonly replace

We regularly replace and upgrade early units from brands including Rolec, Pod Point, Chargemaster / BP Pulse, EO and others — as well as older “dumb” chargers with no app or smart features, and units whose manufacturers no longer offer UK support.

Whatever you currently have on the wall, we’ll recommend the right modern replacement for your vehicle, tariff and home — from value smart chargers to premium units like the Andersen A3, solar-ready options like the Zappi, and tariff specialists like the Ohme Home Pro.
